is a critically acclaimed 2013 biographical drama directed by Riri Riza and produced by Mira Lesmana of Miles Films . Based on the journal entries and book by award-winning anthropologist Butet Manurung , the film chronicles her real-life efforts to bring education to the indigenous Orang Rimba (People of the Forest) in the Bukit Duabelas National Park in Jambi, Sumatra. Plot Overview
The story follows Butet Manurung (played by ) as she works for a conservation NGO, teaching the children of the upstream Makekal river how to read, write, and count. Her perspective shifts when she collapses from malaria and is rescued by Nyungsang Bungo , a boy from a downstream clan that Butet does not yet know.
Bungo, who has secretly been observing Butet's classes, carries a rolled-up land exploitation agreement that has been stamped by his tribal leaders. Eager to understand the document to protect his community's land from plantation owners, Bungo seeks to learn to read. However, Butet faces resistance from both her superiors at the agency and the downstream clan, who believe formal education brings "calamity" or curses.
