In the aftermath, President Grant appoints West and Gordon as the first two agents of the newly formed Secret Service. Rita reveals that the man they rescued is actually her husband, not her father, much to the disappointment of both West and Gordon. The two agents then ride off into the sunset on the Wanderer, ready for their next mission.
The investigation leads them to Dr. Arlovlov Loveless, a brilliant but insane Confederate scientist who uses a wheelchair due to losing the lower half of his body in the war. Loveless is holding the other scientists captive and is using them to build a massive, steam-powered mechanical spider equipped with heavy weaponry. He plans to use the machine to destroy the United States and divide the country among the great powers of the world, including himself.
President Ulysses S. Grant informs the two that several of America's top scientists have been kidnapped and orders them to join forces to find them.
